BRACES or BRACE LINES

THE BRACE'S OR BRACE LINES OF A SQUARE RIGGED SAILING SHIP.

THE BRACE LINES

The BRACE LINES ( highlighted in magenta ) pivot the YARDS from one side to another so the sails can be adjusted relative to the winds direction, this also allows the ship to be manoeuvred. The brace lines are attached to the end of each yard and then lead through a pulley block and down to deck level so they can be adjusted easily by the ships crew.
